September Speed Networking Event Prior the Chapter Meeting
Prior to the September 15th chapter meeting from 5:15 – 5:45 PM, the Social Networking team will be hosting a speed networking event. Many members have asked for ways to meet more members and gain networking skills – so here is your chance to do both! We will start promptly at 5:15pm.
How speed networking will work:
Much like speed dating, each participant will have a few minutes to talk to another participant. When the signal is given, it is time to switch. Participants will share business cards, information about themselves, and what brought them to this event. Prior to the event, it is strongly recommended that you develop a short (< 1 minute) “elevator speech” about yourself. The goal is to meet new people, not to congregate with people you already know.
Remember, if you make yourself interesting and memorable, others will want to make you a part of their network.
Below is some helpful information to assist you with preparing for the Speed Networking event.
What to bring to speed networking:
• Business cards or networking cards – if you don’t have one, create one!
• Your personal elevator statement
• Paper and pen for taking notes about people you meet
• A willingness to meet new contacts and share your knowledge about project management
Suggestions for elevator statement:
• Name, employer, what type of position you hold
• If you aren’t working, what type of position you are seeking
• What skills, traits best describe who you are and what you do – what’s unique about your skillset
Hint: several sites offer free business cards, sample networking cards, and sample
elevator statements – just search these terms on the web to get more information
Suggestions for discussion topics (after introductions):
• How long have you been a member of PMI? Of the Charlotte chapter?
• How did you get involved in project management?
• What type of project management work have you done? Ask about skills/companies/industries
• Do you hold the PMP certification? If so, for how long? How has it provided benefit to you? If not certified, do you think you will pursue it?
In general, think about what you want to get out of the event and ask questions accordingly. Remember, it’s not all about you; listen to your partner for areas you have in common and let the conversation go from there. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to memberrelations@pmi-metrolina.com.
